It's been 50 years since Cannes' iconic sea promenade, La Croisette, was structurally renovated. The local town hall has now announced a plan to modernise Cannes' boardwalk and beach clubs.

Built in the second half of the 19th century, La Croisette is flanked by Belle Epoque palaces turned into hotels on one side and sandy Mediterranean beaches on the other. This is where the Palais des Festivals is located, and dozens of Hollywood stars wander along its boulevard in between red carpets and photoshoots every May when the Cannes Film Festival is on.

The local authorities have decided that it's now time for a facelift. A year ago, the first stage of this renovation plan was undertaken, broadening the beaches from 5m to 20m by the addition of 95,000m3 of sand. The next step is the refurbishment of the beach clubs which have recently renewed their concessions. The town hall has set strict aesthetic rules to maintain the Croisette's iconic image.

Finally, between 2020 and 2021, a third phase of the project will be focused on rebuilding the pavement and the cycle path to make the promenade more easily accessible.
