featured in News & reviews Author Pam Williamson, Cannes Editor Updated

Since its inauguration in 1967 the Cannes International Fireworks Festival has been entertaining crowds on the French Riviera with brilliant displays of pyrotechnical genius from across the globe.

Taking place on various dates between the 14th July and 24th August 2016, the 48th edition of the International Fireworks Festival will see teams competing to win the coveted Silver Vestal d'Argent and the Prix du Public (the vote cast by the audience). Each display team must create a display that lasts for a minimum of 25 minutes and all effects must be aerial and nautical. Positioned offshore, the pyrotechnics are launched from three barges and views by around 200,000 people along the promenade.

Spectators are not only treated to a visual display but teams must also set their pyrotechnic art to music. Finding the best place to watch the fireworks is key and very much depends on what sort of atmosphere you are looking for. A simple picnic on one of the Croisette beaches will give you a spectacular view and have you in amongst the main throng of spectators. Arrive early to claim your spot and enjoy the sunset before the action begins.

Alternatively, you might prefer one of the many rooftop bars in Cannes. A touch of luxury, comfort and the possibility of top-class food and champagne with your entertainment may be too much to resist. Consider booking in advance as these are popular sports for enjoying the fireworks display.

There are several boat trips that you can join to enjoy the display from the bay of Cannes. Taking you out on the water to watch the festival as well as offering you dinner and drinks. Or if you're more inclined towards a private setting then you should consider chartering a private yacht for the occasion. Watching the fireworks from the comfort of your own deck with the champagne chilling beside you and the stars twinkling above. Heavenly.

All displays take place at 22:00 on their respective dates. Competing teams and their themes are as follows:
